Guest host Joy Behar interviews author Gary Taubes about his new book and talks to a panel about the myths of dieting. Full transcipt: transcripts.cnn.com Transcend says tinyurl.com Typically solid at room or body temperature, saturated fats are sticky and can cause red blood cells to clump together, inhibiting their ability to carry oxygen to the cells. Saturated fats can also cause blood platelets to stick together and form blood clots that can cause a heart attack or stroke. Reducing consumption of saturated fat improves the health of most people. They provide support to your cell membranes and serve as precursors to a variety of hormones and hormonelike substances. A middle of the road approach to saturated fat consumption is to consume about 3 to 7 percent of your daily calories as saturated fat. www.imminst.org www.imminst.org

Poor Dr. Oz – he should read Gary’s book with an open mind. Most doctors don’t study nutrition; they just treat the negative effects of people who eat like doctor’s tell them too.
“Doctor” Oz wont shut his yapper. Gary Taubes needed to be more forceful, since Dr. Oz was clearly grasping at straws and Taubes was using hard science. MDs are not research scientists – just because he has performed an open heart surgery doesnt mean that he knows what made that person obese in the first place.
Dr. Oz is just another extensions of the commercialized faction of the Health industry. He is just feeding the public the same, unproven doctrine that’s been told to us forever. Gary Taubes has the most refreshing viewpoint on health that I have ever heard. I myself just started applying his principles and am confident that tremendous results will follow. Dr. Oz has no business giving health advice to the American public.
Great, a debate between one guy who has researched the topic thoroughly for years, meticulously sifting through the last 150 years of research, and a guy who cuts people open for a living. I’m not knocking surgery, just pointing out that it doesn’t make him an expert on nutrition. And kudos for Weil for giving due credit to the comprehensive case that Taubes makes.
i would sooooo love if oz and gary fist fighted lmao!! 5$ on gary
wow, why do so called “scientists” that are lobbied my pharmaceuticals companies, think that poor people are stupid?

Gary Taubes is a friggin genius. I read his book, talked to my husband about it. He read it. We instantly quit most carbs & ALL sugar. I GOT 10 COPIES OF GARY’S BOOK AND AM GIVING IT TO EVERYONE, esp. doctors I know.
GIST OF GARY TAUBES’ BOOK: You are waiting to meet your Maker, get cancer, have a heart attack, get Alzheimers, if you have HIGH TRIGLYCERIDES and low HDL. Total cholesterol is not the issue (couldn’t measure triglycerides till fairly recently). The ONLY WAY to get low t and hi HDL is VERY VERY LOW CARBS AND ABSOLUTELY NO SUGAR. Fat is great. Low fat makes you eat more carbs which is what brings your Triglycerides UP which is what makes for inflammation and all the other things.
The way Dr. Oz reacted here is an amazing representation of the medical community, clinging to conventional wisdom and turning a blind eye to any opposing ideas.
He could have just put his hands over his ears and yelled “I’m not listening!” over and over and his relevance to this discussion would be exactly the same.
haha Dr. Oz could not defend his argument and all he could resort to is to I’M a DOCTOR I KNOW BEST because I have an Md. degree…..
I applaud Gary, he kept is cool and kept going back to the science
TAUBES FTW!!
There has been research that suggests that tobacco protects the body from gaining fat – not that smoking is healthy, but it may effect research results on carbohydrate sensitivity.
I REALLY want to go up against Jillian on a biggest loser low-carb vs. low-fat on NATIONAL TV. Plus, I can’t stand her!
@SilverNova13 Yeah, 3, correction, 4 against 1 hardly seems like a fair fight!
@spontaneousmixx Jillian Michaels will never take you up on that challenge, for the same reason that many “fitness experts’ and “diet experts” would never engage you in that challenge. If it is demonstrated that what Taubes is saying is true, Jillian’s career as well as many of the careers of her colleagues, which are fundamentally built on either a lie or something that is impractical , would be over.
If Jillian and one of the people she trained on “The Biggest Loser” is the example put forth by the low calorie/ exercise proponents, they need to realize they are putting forth bad evidence. Anyone who looks up the training and dietary regiment used on that show can tell you that most regular people could not sustain it unless they have an army of dieticians, chefs, personal trainers, and a support network. These are all things that regular working class people don’t have at their disposal.
@Awaitingcertainty Just out of curiosity, how much weight have you lost following the prescriptions enumerated in Gary Taubes book?
alphacause asked how much weight I’ve lost – Frankly I’m pretty skinny with just a bit of a pot belly due to child-bearing — I’m 55. I’ve lost 6 lbs. So weight wasn’t my greatest issue. It’s how I want my blood to be — look at the youtube video called jorge cruise death by sugar. I read every word of Gary Taubes book. It could not be more convincing — it’s the ENERGY you get when you get off carbs & sugar that is most remarkable.
I’m so glad that there are other people on here who have read the book and support it also, I feel like im surrounded by people who parrot the same old conventional wisdom with very little actual understanding for what they are saying.
I love at 5:15 how Dr. Oz puts his hand over Taubes’ mouth. How ironic that a representative of conventional medical wisdom would physically try to silence those who through logic and science bring would speak out against their conventional wisdom. Too funny and ironic.
@alphacause It’s the same regiment that you can do at home. It seems more complicated and extreme because their workout becomes their full time job while at the ranch. Hence, they lose the weight quicker and in more dramatic fashion….you can do the same at home it just takes longer.
I think it’s funny how CNN trots out these pop culture bozos to refute such a well written book. Obviously the contentions in Taubes’ book are a threat to their bottom line. Imagine “Loser” without the monster workout sessions and scrupulous diets. If those individuals simply eliminated carbs, there would be no show to watch.
I lost 30lbs with cal restriction too but what Gary is trying to say is that it’s basically a dead end method. When I finally met my goal (120 lbs) I tried to bring my cals back in to matience mode (2000 cals a day) but I gained 10 pounds (not water weight) because my BMI was slowed down so much. I was also still starving at 2000 cals a day . I read Taubes book and started low carb. It’s amazing. I eat what I want without having to constantly calculate cals, I’m never hungry and I have energy.
I ‘m so grateful for his book because I never realized I could maintain my weight without having to forever count calories. I spent months dealing with cravings, headaches and hunger. I don’t experience any of this anymore and I’m able to maintain my weight while actually LIVING my life. I never have to constantly calculate my daily cals, my weight lifiting/tennis improved and hunger is no longer an issue. I could write pages about how low carb has made my life so much easier.
