The most popular diets have repeatedly shown themselves to be ineffective for most people for a period of more than a year. Gina Kolata of The New York Times wrote a book entitled "Rethinking Thin" in which she reviews the peer reviewed literature on the most popular diets. She found research studies of highly motivated subjects. All of the most popular diets failed, including: Medically supervised calorie restricted diets, Atkins diet, and Weight Watchers. None of these programs have peer reviewed studies that show much effectiveness for a period greater than one year.
Why do people continue to spend huge sums of money for programs that are destined to fail for the vast majority of people? Why aren’t the profiteers being held accountable?
By the way, some medically supervised high protein diets can be dangerous. Dr. T. Colin Campbell has shown the correlations between breast cancer, prostate cancer, and other cancers associated with casein (cow milk protein). Whey protein is commonly used in protein drinks. I lost a friend to cancer a few years after she had been on the medically supervised diet consisting of mostly vitamins and whey protein. Of course, she gained back the weight after the diet ended. She later was diagnosed with cancer and died at a young age.
Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, Sr. wrote about "Surgeon’s Dilemma" and medical ethics.
Thank you KIRKUK for the detailed description related to cancer inception. T. Colin Campbell is a distinguished professor from Cornell who studied the affect of casein diet on laboratory rats and then conducted epidemiological studies with the help of Oxford, Cornell, and the Chinese government. After three decades of peer reviewed research he showed strong correlations between cow milk consumption and the growth of some forms of cancer. The lab work created small liver cancer tumors in rats using aflotoxin, and then fed one group a vegetarian diet, the other had standard protein feed from casein. The tumors in the vegetarian rats did not grow. The normal fed rats suffered a huge rate of tumor growth as every stage after inception of the tumor. They changed the feed midway on some animals and found that the tumors stopped their growth. You should read the following book:
"The China Study"
I think you will find the data convincing. He explains the theory behind why casein protein is l
My question again was about popular diets and there have been some great answers
