Picture a 40 year old today. Maybe some greys, maybe some balding but maybe not. Could be fit, toned, hardly any wrinkles. At the time, when the life expectancy was 40, someone that wasn’t hunched over, fragile, with wrinkles like 80 yr olds today, just died? Or did they look like the 80 yr olds of today?
My question again was about fit over 40 and there have been some great answers

i have no clue but that is a good question and i really want to know the answer.
There were no doctors or dentists, bathrooms or hygiene as we know it today,in early man there were some people whom lived to older years, but not very many,if you couldn’t carry your weight, you were outcast from the group and often to your death. As the middle ages arrived,so did disease, areas of population. All of these things took a great toll on the body.
this is why the Romeo and Juliet story places them at the ages of 14-16.An average marrying age.
They looked older because life was a lot harder back then. Stress and manual labor ages you fast.
They probably looked older than 40 year olds today, though not as old as 80 year olds and they definitely wouldn’t be as healthy. They would have to have gone through much more physical labor and they didn’t get as good of a nutrition as we do now. Working harder puts more stress on your body, which ages you more. Not having good nutrients also puts you at higher risk for many diseases and disorders that we don’t even have to deal with anymore in industrialized societies. We live much healthier lives and can access better food nowadays, and that’s why we don’t age or die as fast. If you look at many parts of Africa today, the survival is STILL to only around 40 years old and maybe even younger. Obviously they don’t look like 80 years or a healthy 40 years, but they are dying so young because of disease and malnutrition, such as AIDS.
